What is gentrification? What drives it? Is it by design? how does it shape our cities? What does gentrification have to do with displacement? What does gentrification have to do with skyscrapers? Is gentrification a form of class war? Who benefits from gentrification? How do these processes unfold in Manchester? and what can we do about it?

No word is perhaps as used and misused as gentrification when it comes to understanding our cities. Its clear that it describes a very real phenomenon – one that is only too evident in a city like Manchester. But accounts of what gentrification actually is often vary. On the 12th September, GMTU will host a study day on the question, to explore together the question of gentrification, learn about what drives it and think how organisations like ours can be part of the movement against it.
